Dr Comley has over 20 years experience in Drug Discovery, particularly high
throughput screening (HTS). He received his Ph.D. in Parasite Chemotherapy from
Imperial College, London University, UK in 1978. After post-doctoral work at the
University of Liverpool and the University of Vermont he joined the Wellcome
Research Laboratories, Beckenham, UK in 1982. After the merger of GlaxoWellcome
in 1995 he worked in the Lead Discovery Unit at Stevenage. While there he
pioneered investigations into uHTS through the implementation of 1536 well plate
technology. After joining PerkinElmer Life Sciences at Wallac Oy, Turku, Finland
in 1999 as Manger, HTS Technologies he was responsible for the development of
SmartStation™ concept and for the assessment of novel enabling HTS technologies.
In 2002 he became an independent consultant based in Cambridge, UK and
specializes in providing informed opinion and market research on those enabling
and emerging technologies that underpin HTS today. To date many of his clients
have been drawn from those companies that are developing novel liquid handling
and detection instruments, laboratory automation and assay reagents. He has
helped them maximise the market potential of their developments and gain the
competitive edge through better understanding of the latest requirements of
customers working in HTS laboratories. John has an excellent record of
achievement in new product development and commercialisation, global marketing,
HTS business development, pharmaceutical R&D and the management of
multi-disciplinary project teams. He has published over 40 papers and is the
inventor on 5 patents.
